Having two babies is daunting and the number of things you need can get out of hand quickly – especially if you’re buying two of everything! When I was looking for what we needed, I wished I had a list like this of baby must-haves for the new twin mom.
Now that we’re 9 months into twin motherhood, I feel confident I can recommend products and whether or not you need doubles for your twins.
Skip the MamaRoo! For the price tag, two is just not worth it. We received one as a gift, and we were very grateful for it, so we used it. However, our babies MUCH preferred the hand-me-down swing we used from our sister. The specific one we used is by Graco, but is 8 years old so I can’t link it, but this Graco Simple Sway is a comparable option.
These Sit Me Up seats were lifesavers when it came to showers! I was also incredibly paranoid about my twins having a flat head since there were two of them and it was really hard to hold both and keep them off the back of their heads. We did tummy time quite often, but also, once they could hold their head up and sit for a little bit, they loved these seats.
Another great benefit of these seats is they’re quite portable! They fold down slightly, the tray comes off, and the toys come out. If you have one of those big blue IKEA bags, you can fold them up, shove them in there, and take them with you. We frequently brought them to my sister’s or mom’s house, providing a safe space in an otherwise not baby-proof area as well as a feeding station!
When it comes to having clean and dry bibs once your littles are eating solids, these silicone bibs are the ONLY way I’m able to manage it. I’m not sure if I’m just a disaster all the time, but I could not keep up with keeping clean, dry bibs available. Silicone ones mean you can easily wash and dry them right before food time.
Boom. Clean dry bibs whenever you need.
We just have one two-pack, so one bib for each baby and we wash them every time we need them. They’re great – love them! I don’t see us ever straying away from these now that we’ve been using them for the last three months.
Being a twin mom is expensive and some of the car seats on the market are EXPENSIVE. An inexpensive infant seat is a must-have for the new twin mom. The Graco Snugride Snuglock 35 Infant Car Seat has served us incredibly well. Here are some of the selling features that sold us, and proved true as we have used them over the last 9 months:
We initially only bought one snot sucker, figuring we could just wash in between uses. What a silly twin mom we were.
Twins get sick at the same time, without fail. And ours got Covid at 5 weeks old. We quickly went out and bought a second snot sucker. Washing one 6 times a day, TIMES 2, gets old very fast.
Just save yourself and get two right off the hop.
We actually bought a third with a fancy travel case to keep in the diaper bag.
The Graco TrioGrow Convertible Car Seat is our purchase this year on Amazon Prime Day. At 30% off, and having to buy two, the pricing is excellent.
Of course, we did our research before hand and have had our eyes on this seat waiting for a sale for a few months now. This seat is also recommended by our favourite car seat safety resource, Safe in the Seat.
We initially started with one activity mat from my sister’s stash of baby things. We would lay both babies in it to play and do tummy time and it was more than sufficient in the early days.
Eventually, we added this Baby Einstein Play Mat one to our collection as the babies got older. They started kicking and it became dangerous to leave them on the same space with the flailing limbs.
You definitely do not need two of each of these items. We had one of each and would just alternate the babies between them to provide variety. I know it’s trendy now to not use “containers” for your kids. As a mom of twins, this just isn’t practical. Sometimes you need safe, entertaining spaces to put one of them down while you go change the other. Or just try to eat your own food so you can stay nourished to produce more milk.
We saved our favourite for last! If you’re considering only one Jolly Jumper for your twins, let me just say, the smiles and moments the twins’ will share with each other as they’re jumping side by side are worth every single penny for the second jolly jumper.
We received these as a gift for Christmas, otherwise, I likely would have only purchased one myself. I am so grateful we had two! The noises, excitement, laughs, and smiles we got to witness our twins share together are absolutely priceless. I definitely recommend the stand version, unless you have two door frames across from each other so the twins can still see each other while they are jumping. Their interactions are the best part!
And yes, our pediatrician gave us the stamp of approval to use jolly jumpers for about 20 minutes a day without issue! Her caution was not to use them as a babysitter.
The added bonus was before the twins’ were sitting at their highchairs eating solids with us, we would put them in their jolly jumpers and my partner and I would get to enjoy a dinner together for 15 minutes.
