Paint Nite with Chelsey!

heyitsbex · December 15, 2015 · Leave a Comment

Have you ever been to a Paint Nite?! Let me tell you – they’re such a unique, fun, creative night out! I had heard about them before but never had the opportunity to attend one. Until my friend Chelsey invited me to one tonight! It was hosted at the Cheesecake Cafe, which is an adorable little restaurant in my town. It was so much fun. This also happens to be the first time I’ve painted on a canvas – annnnd it checks off an item on my 25×26 list – yes!

If you’ve never heard of Paint Nite before, essentially you show up (and by show up, I mean pre-book on their website) at the location that’s hosting it, you can grab a glass of wine and then you get to paint a painting! They provide the canvas, paint, brushes, all the supplies you need and a sample painting that you’re going to paint your own version of.

One of my favourite parts of the night is that it’s such a fun way to sit down with some girlfriends and just chat! Don’t get me wrong – coffee and shopping and movie nights and such are fun, but there’s something so great about just sitting down and painting and getting some good quality girl talk in.

If that’s not enough to entice you, you also get to wear these super cool aprons! Which, even with an apron I still got paint on my sleeve. Oops!

Since going to France, I’m a huge fan of wine. Chelsey got a nice blush Zinfindel, and I had a glass Malbec from Argentina. I love how the girl leading the paint night talked us through the different layers of the painting. It was so cool to see it start out as just a blue ombre. Both Chelsey and I put the top dark blue on and said “Oh my goodness, it looks so dark!” but it dried so nice!

I got a little carried away with the swirls on my clouds. I had just the right amount of next to no paint on my brush so it was going on so nicely!

Check ’em ouuut! I think we did an exceptional job and we both added our own little flare. I snuck in some little birdys and made my clouds all whispy, and Chels added in the greatest moon! Love, love, love it!

Overall, Paint Nite was a huge success! It’s definitely something I’d like to do every month or atleast bi-monthly. If you’ve been considering attending one, I highly recommend you get your butt out there!

Incase you’re wondering… here’s what the original looked like (right), and the one Missy painted as she walked us through the different phases of the painting (left).

Annnnnd, seeing as I had never been to the Cheesecake Cafe before, and we got to the restaurant early and ordered some food, this totally counts as one of the five new restaurants I have to try for my 25×26 list. We ordered the spinach and artichoke dip with baked pita chips, some boneless ribs that were topped with crunchy onions and paired with a honey mustard sauce, and a Tuscan Flatbread that had some spices and cheese on it. All of the appys were pretty tasty. I’d definitely head back and order an entree – I have a sneaky suspicion it would be quite good.

Have you ever been to a Paint Nite? I’d love to see your creations!

My first business trip.

Exciting news over here! Tomorrow I leave on my first business trip! I’m incredibly excited, and can’t wait for the new responsibilities. The awesome part is its with a client back home so I’ll be able to see friends and family on my trip as well.

Here’s what I’ve packed for some reading material while I’m gone. I’m hoping to knock some books off of my 24×25 list during the plane rides!

Project Life: the beginning.

heyitsbex · February 9, 2015 · Leave a Comment

I’m so excited!! I’ve been eyeing the Project Life kits in Michaels ever since I discovered Elise’s Project Life archives. I absolutely adore the concept of Project Life. Cherishing the every day and making the most of this season of my life is definitely a reoccurring theme in my life right now, so I’m so excited to document it all in my new Project Life Album.

I think this is the perfect summary of Project Life. I’m so happy this card was in my kit!

Simply put, Project Life is a scrapbooking system, composed of a Core Kit, an album, and inserts. It takes the time consuming and difficulty out of scrapbooking, and strips it down to the basics. Documenting your every day life in an easy, yet beautiful and creative format. You just slip pictures, decorative cards, journalling cards, or that ticket stub from the show you went to into the pockets in the inserts.

I absolutely love that this is a simple, effective, and creative way to document my life!

My hope is to do one double-page spread per week! I’m sure with the arrival of my nephew, I’ll have no problems taking enough pictures to fill these pages. I’ve got my sister and mom on board too, so we’ll be making an hour to two out of it on the weekends together! And of course, to keep myself motivated and accountable, I’ll be sharing my spreads on Mondays starting March 1st as a week in review post.

Here’s what I’m starting out with:

  • Black and White Stripe Album
  • Midnight Edition Core Kit
  • Big Pack of Design A Inserts
  • Gold Foil Embellishments
  • 12 Gold Foil Variety Insert Pack

Learning to crochet.

A new year always is a great time for a new beginning. Or in my case, a great time to learn a new skill. This past New Year’s Eve was probably one of my most memorable ones yet. I spent the evening with my sister and mom. We stayed in, watched movies, and in my case, learned a new skill (read: acquired a new addiction).

This was my first project. Granted, it doesn’t fit, but that’s okay! I made something! I could go back and take out a couple rows. It wasn’t really based on a particular pattern, as much as it was my mom teaching me a crochet stitch, and going from there. Though, I did use this tutorial for the flower.

Annnnd then my addictive personality took over. I wanted to crochet anything and everything. I pinned 200+ awesome crocheted things. I spent hours sifting through patterns on Ravelry. And in the past 30 days I have crocheted:

  • a headband
  • a set of baby booties for one of my dearest friend’s baby girl
  • multiple washable makeup remover pads (there’ll be a blog post coming on those!)
  • vintage victorian coasters
  • a pair of boot cuffs
  • And this guy (courtesy of this awesome pattern).

I can honestly say this guy is my most favourite. There’s something so rewarding about crocheting something for my little nephew. This bear is already filled with more love than anything a store can provide.

I can imagine Baby A as a toddler running around with this guy in tow.

I can imagine having to sew this little guy back together multiple times.

I can imagine the day he loses one of his eyes.

And honestly, it makes my heart scream with joy. Some of my fondest memories as a kid involved a teddy bear my mom knitted me. Some of the saddest include one of us being sick and wanting nothing other than the teddy bear mom knitted us. It’s amazing how things come full circle.

Look at his cute little butt!!

It’s been an amazing 30 days of crocheting things. I’ve even taught my sister how to crochet! I’m so excited for all the other projects I’ve already picked out. I’ve already started a blanket for another little one on the way!

What about you guys? Do you crochet? What’s your favourite thing you’ve made? Or do you have any family traditions that have been carried on through the generations?

Bex goes surfing

heyitsbex · January 28, 2015 · Leave a Comment

Back in November, the women of my family travelled from three different places and met up in Maui for a week of paradise and celebrating my mom’s birthday. Maui has such diverse geography. Rainforests, volcanoes, and oceanfronts. It was truly beautiful.

One of the only things on my to-do list for this vacation was to learn how to surf! So bright and early on my mom’s birthday, we piled into our SUV and trekked into Lahaina to Maui Wave Riders. The day before my mom and I had done a paddleboarding lesson, so we requested the same instructor, Sonny, for our surf lessons. After a quick tutorial on the beach, we were off to the ocean to catch our first wave!

Sonny would guide us along the wave, let go of our board, and it was up to us to get up on our board and ride the wave to the shore! It definitely made it much easier, not having to time the waves ourselves. It really lets you experience surfing in the short two hours.

I’m no pro, but I definitely had the time of my life! I can’t wait to surf again, and learn how to time the waves. It truly was an experience to check off my bucket list!

Have you ever surfed? If so, where!
