Let me start out by saying, making new friends as an adult is hard! We take for granted the availability of people looking for friends in our college years. Once you get out into the real world, building genuine connections is one of the most challenging things you can set out to do.
As adults, we all go to work, socialize with our colleagues and then go home and take care of our stuff at home, whether it’s the dog, your children, your husband, etc. The interaction in the workplace is enough to appease the need for social interaction within us. Yet, for those of us who are single who don’t have somebody to go home to at the end of the day, it makes for very boring evenings.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I’ve joined some sports teams to fill up my evenings and I have my family who I spend majority of my time with, and I have all my girls back in Ontario. But a girl needs some friends she can hang out with in the flesh, which is likely why my sister put ‘make 2 new friends’ on my 27 x 28 list.
Now, I have amazing people at work I talk to all the time, but the criteria for this specific list item was that I needed to hang out with them outside of work time, where it wasn’t convenience that placed us together but rather intention.
I was super happy when Lois and Kara suggested I join them for Lois’ birthday celebrations! It involved taking a limo to West Edmonton mall for a fancy dinner at Cactus Club, followed by some drinking at Hudson’s.
Kara even invited me over to get ready with her before the night began. It was some good old fashioned girl time complete with a glass of wine and I couldn’t be happier. Now, despite the rule of having to hang out outside of work, I would have considered Kara one of the good friends any way. She’s got a heart of gold and is one of the funniest people I know. She definitely makes work that much better and is easily one of the best things about having to spend 35 hours a week in the same place. But, I digress.
It was by far the most enjoyable night I have had in a very long time, and these two girls are top notch. I’m so excited for all the shenanigans to come with these beautiful ladies.
Oh, by the way, happy birthday, Lois!
